Dubai's climate is one of the most challenging environments for vinyl storage on the planet. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°C outdoors, and vehicles parked in direct sun can reach temperatures that would soften and permanently deform a vinyl record in under an hour. Indoor air conditioning makes Dubai apartments a viable environment for vinyl collections — but getting the conditions right requires understanding what the format needs.

The Critical Rules for Vinyl Storage in Dubai

Temperature

Vinyl records begin to soften at approximately 60–65°C and can warp at sustained temperatures above 45°C. In Dubai, this means:

• Store records in an air-conditioned room at all times — bedroom, living room or study
• Never leave records in a parked car — even a short trip can expose a vehicle interior to temperatures that cause permanent warping
• Keep records away from exterior walls that receive direct afternoon sun — even through glass, radiant heat can accumulate at the wall surface
• During power outages (rare in Dubai but possible), move records away from windows

Humidity

Dubai's coastal areas experience high humidity in summer (June–September) that can promote mould growth on record sleeves and paper inner sleeves. Dubai's powerful air conditioning systems actively dehumidify indoor air — the typical Dubai apartment interior sits at a safe 40–55% relative humidity when air conditioned.

• Store records in air-conditioned rooms to keep humidity in the 35–55% range
• Replace paper inner sleeves with polyethylene anti-static inner sleeves — paper absorbs moisture and can stick to record surfaces in humid conditions
• Use polyethylene outer sleeves on cardboard jackets to protect from humidity-induced warping of the sleeve

Dust

Dubai's desert environment means dust is a constant challenge. Fine particulate dust settles on record surfaces and accumulates in stylus grooves. Dubai collectors need to be more diligent about record cleaning than collectors in most other cities:

• Use a carbon-fibre anti-static brush before every play to remove surface dust
• Keep records in their sleeves when not in use — do not leave records on the turntable platter
• Consider a velvet record cleaning brush for deeper cleaning of frequently played records

Shelving and Vertical Storage

Records must be stored vertically — like books on a shelf — never flat in horizontal stacks. Horizontal stacking causes the weight of upper records to press down on lower ones, leading to warping over time. A dedicated record shelf or Ikea Kallax unit (the standard worldwide) works well in Dubai apartments.
