Dubai's vinyl collector community is one of the most culturally diverse in the world. A city of over 200 nationalities, each with its own musical heritage and collector sensibility, has produced a vinyl scene that is harder to characterise than any single city's collector community — and more interesting for it.

Who Collects Vinyl in Dubai

Arab Collectors

Emirati, Levantine, Egyptian and Gulf Arab collectors form the core of Dubai's Arabic vinyl market. For these collectors, vinyl records are often bound up with family memory — the recordings their parents listened to, the music of a particular place or time. Fairuz, Oum Kalthoum and Abdel Halim Hafez are the anchors of this collecting culture. Gulf artists — Mohammed Abdo, Rashed Al-Majid, Nabeel Shuail — have strong collector followings among Emirati, Saudi and Kuwaiti residents.

Western and European Expats

Dubai's large British, European and American expat community brought vinyl collecting habits to the city. Classic rock (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles), 80s and 90s pop, and jazz form the backbone of this market segment. Many in this community already had turntables before arriving in Dubai and have continued or expanded their collections here.

South Asian Collectors

Dubai's large Indian, Pakistani and South Asian community drives demand for Bollywood vinyl, classical Indian recordings (Ravi Shankar, Lata Mangeshkar), and Qawwali (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan). This is one of the most historically rooted collector communities in Dubai — South Asian families have been collecting music here for generations.

Young Dubai Collectors

A new generation of Dubai-born and raised collectors — regardless of background — has embraced vinyl as a counter to the digital default. K-pop, hip-hop, indie and electronic music on vinyl are particularly popular with this demographic. The format's collectibility, its physicality and its resistance to algorithmic curation are all part of the appeal.

The Dubai Vinyl Calendar

Record Store Day (April and October) is observed by Dubai-based online stores with limited-edition releases. Occasional record fairs and vinyl pop-up events have grown in frequency as the community has grown.
